What is a well woman exam?
A well woman exam is a regular healthcare exam involving a woman’s reproductive health. This examination includes screenings such as: a Pap smear, STI screenings, HPV vaccinations and menstrual cycle issues. You don’t need an illness to make this appointment.
Why visit a gynaecologist for well woman care?
You can certainly visit your general practitioner for your annual check up and receive a Pap smear and address any concerns. However, your GP may refer you to a gynaecologist, depending upon your specific concerns or test results. It is never a bad idea to request a visit to a gynaecologist, whether you are currently ill or not. As experts in their field, well woman care is one of their specialties, and a gynaecologist, such as Dr. Wong, can give a more in-depth examination than a primary care physician.
What should you expect during your well woman care exam?
During a well woman exam, you will go over your medical and sexual history. It is important to make a list of any medications you are currently taking, any recent family illnesses that have arisen, as well as any medical concerns you may have. This can include changes to your menstrual cycle, breast lumps, sexual pain, etc. It is important to note that any lumps or pain should be addressed as quickly as possible. Depending upon your medical history, concerns, test results and exams will vary from patient to patient.
